Mercury Fillings A Health Threat?
Controversy Over Mercury In Teeth Heats Up
BOSTON — Ben Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, saw his career hit a dark note seven years ago.
“They told me it was Meniere’s disease and there was nothing they could do about it,” said Zander.
Zander was suffering from an inner ear disease. It caused dizziness and vomiting. During concerts he would have to pass the baton to an assistant and leave the stage.
“It was devastating when my hearing went . It was ghastly. It could have been career-ending,” explained Zander.
He went from doctor to doctor, and no one could help. Then he was referred biological dentist Dr. G. Robert Evans of the Groton Wellness Dental Spa and Medical Center. Evans traced his symptoms to the amalgam fillings in his mouth. Fillings that were partly mercury. Evans removed 15 fillings immediately.
“Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive substance known to man. It is 1,000 times more toxic than lead, said Evans.
After the removal of Zander’s fillings, he has had, a miraculous recovery from his disease. All of the symptoms disappeared.
The safety of the mercury in amalgam fillings has been fueling controversy for years, but just last month, after days of testimony, an FDA panel concluded amalgam fillings are safe.
Senior clinical researcher Dr. Mary Tavares of the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge did a clinical trial on amalgams in children in 2006, and in December, testified before the panel.
Tavares told Newscenter 5’s Rhondella Richardson, “I don’t have any evidence I can point to scientifically to say it was dangerous.”
The American Dental Association said the FDA acted appropriately last month when it found that dental amalgam is a safe and effective treatment option for the general public. But the ADA also supports the feds’ recommendation to continue review of existing and new scientific information as it becomes available.
“The World Health Organization declared there’s no safe level of exposure to mercury,” said Evans, who runs a mercury free practice.
“The fact that I got over my Meniere’s disease because I had the metal out of my teeth is not proof it caused a problem but that’s what happened,” said Zander, who said he has never missed another concert after having his fillings removed.
